Veterans Day has always been special for House of Heroes Connecticut. Since our founding in
2012, we have annually assisted Veterans in need on or about the Veterans Day holiday to not
only thank them for their service, but to honor all those who served while commemorating the
year’s signature Veterans holiday.
This year, the Veterans Day holiday will be extraordinary for HOHCT. On Saturday, November 9,
HOHCT will provide no-cost home repairs for a North Haven Vietnam Veteran and Purple Heart
recipient, and a Shelton Army Veteran. The projects are being supported by Project Partners
Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, and Contractors Direct, with the assistance of students
from Quinnipiac University.
Also in recognition of the Veterans Day holiday this year, a third veteran in Durham will be
served, thanks to the generous donation of new gutters by DiGiorgi Roofing and Siding.
And making Veterans Day even more special this year is our partnership with Northwestern
Regional School District 7. Approximately 15 students – and likely more - from Northwestern
Regional High School will volunteer to dedicate their school day on Monday, November 4, to
completing a major yard clean-up for 85-year-old U.S. Navy Veteran Leon Gomlinski of Winsted
– our fourth Vet to be served this Veterans Day holiday. HOHCT will manage the project, and
virtually the entire school-district will be engaged in one way, shape or form, from students to
staff to vendors.
The special project will be featured in a WTNH News 8 feature story as part of News 8’s What’s
Right With Schools series.
“This is very exciting for us,” says District 7 Superintendent of Schools Steve LePage. “We are
really proud of our district, and this project will be a great example of how our kids come
together to support one another and others who are in need – especially our Veterans.”
Project supporters include USA Waste & Recycling, which is donating dumpster services;
Mario’s Tuscany Bar & Grill of Winsted, which is donating lunch for the student and staff
volunteers; and David Webb Property Services which is donating mulch.
Says Gomlinski, “I am humbled by what House of Heroes and Northwestern Regional School
District 7 and its students are doing for me. God Bless America.”
